Haydn Tanner, one of the great figures of Cardiff and Wales rugby, has died at the age of 92. Considered alongside Gareth Edwards as the finest scrum-half to play for Wales, Tanner first sprung to prominence as a schoolboy scrum-half who was elevated to senior rugby in 1935 and shared in two famous victories by Swansea and Wales over the All Blacks at the tender age of 18. Three years later he toured South Africa with the British Isles and played in a test match against the mighty Springboks.

 Immediately after the war he joined Cardiff and captained the club for two seasons in a golden era when the Blue & Blacks lost only five times in 86 fixtures between September 1947 and April 1949. His vice-captain on both occasions was Bleddyn Williams and their many famous triumphs included the club's 11-3 defeat of the Wallabies. Tanner also captained the Barbarians to victory over the same tourists at the Arms Park and played for Wales before and after World War Two. In total he won 25 caps, plus 12 wartime matches for Wales and in three seasons played 73 times for Cardiff.
