Match Preview

Newport - Cardiff

Cardiff travel to Rodney Parade to do battle with the ‘old enemy’ in the first game of the 2017 / 18 Principality Premiership season.

This will be the first game in the East Wales group that includes the 8 sides from the Blues & Dragons regions in the new format for this season.

The Blue & Blacks front row sees Dillon Lewis join Rhys Carre and captain Joe Tomlinson in a front row that has plenty of Premiership experience. In the engine room Corey Tucker, who has impressed in the pre-season games, joins another new Ben White who moves up from his normal back row position. His place there is taken by Luke Crocker who joins Jim Botham on the flanks. Sion Bennett comes in from the Cardiff Blues to complete the back row.

The back line has few changes from what has been a good start in preseason. Rhodri Cole gets the nod at scrumhalf and partners Gareth Thompson for the second week running. Will Rees Hole and Owen Lane are partnered together again after an impressive display at Taunton. The back three will have plenty of pace whichever wings are chosen. Pat Lewis starts on one wing with James Beal on the other. Llywarch Ap Myrddin completes the backline at fullback.
