A spirited performance by the Blue & Blacks was not enough to defeat table-toppers Newport at the Arms Park.Cardiff trailed 3-10 at half-time after spurning penalty goal opportunities and spilling try-scoring passes.
More crucially, a controversial red card wielded against centre Paul Niblett by referee Colin Saunders after the intervention of touch judge Tony Evans left the Blue & Blacks one man short for the whole of the second half.
Yet they pulled the score back to 11-16 courtesy of an excellent team try finished off by Owen Ruttley.
But Newport’s numerical advantage told in the end with 13 points added in the final 10 minutes.Gareth McCarthy was Cardiff’s other points’ scorer with two penalty goals.
For the visitors Richard Payne, Gareth Gravell and Craig Richards scored tries with Llyr Lane adding 14 points from the boot.
