Match Report

Cardiff 36 Carmarthen Quins 29

Cardiff secured their first home win of the season against a spirited Carmarthen Quins side that never gave up. The home side’s intent was clear from the start, running the ball out of defence on several occasions, the last pass though wasn’t sticking. The Quins took the early lead through a Chris Banfield penalty, but the Blue & Blacks responded with a well worked try by Matthew John after good approach work by Gareth Davies.

In last season’s game Davies scored 29 point and he was out to torment the visitors again as he sliced through the defence to slip a pass to Harry Robinson for the home side’s second. The third followed shortly after, again Davies was involved but it was the slight of hand by Thomas Young that created the hole for John to score his second.

Quins hit back with a Gareth Morgan try just before half time, but the Cardiff try bonus point was secured when Owen Williams ghosted through the defence to score early in the second half. Tom Williams added a fifth to start what looked like an avalanche of points to follow. There was a constant flow of points but it came from the Quins. Tries by Banfiled, Andrew Fenby and James Stephenson saw them creep back into the game and it was only a late Davies drop goal that settled the game in Cardiff’s favour
