The Blue and Blacks came unstuck in the mud at Sardis Rd as Pontypridd won their first game at home on Boxing Day.
The early exchanges we scrappy as the wet conditions dictated, and it was a mistake that lead to the first try. A home line out in the twenty two was stolen and several charges at he line were attempted before Luke Hamilton crashed over, Gareth Davies converted.
Lewis Williams had an opportunity to get the home side on the board with a simple penalty but that drifted just wide. Ponty’s first score came from a Cardiff mistake, a box kick didn’t go very far and was run straight back to the Cardiff line, from the ruck Jake Thomas went straight up the middle, Williams converted.
Both sides were trying to play rugby. Cardiff blew a three to one overlap as the ball was knocked on. Matthew Nuttall came close for Ponty, Thomas Young latched on to an Owen Williams break only to be dragged down just short and the ball went loose as the wet ball became like a bar of soap. Gareth Davies extended the Blue & Blacks lead just before half time, but was just wide with the last kick of an entertaining first half.
The second half belonged to Pontypridd. Williams kicked two penalties to increase the lead, before Sam Hobbs was driven over from a short range line out.
Rhys Patchell did get the visitors within a score as the heavy pitch conditions began to tell. Cardiff did have a chance to pinch it at the end but a cross field kick was knocked on as the referee blew for no side.
