The season of giving returned to the Arms Park as Cardiff gifted Newport three tries to win this Premiership encounter.
The wet conditions made handling the ball difficult and the first period saw the ball dropped regularly. The first try came as early as the fourth minute. Cardiff had control of the ball at the ruck but the ball came out on the Newport side. James Leadbeater spotted that there were no defenders on the blind side and raced 30 metres to score. Matthew Jones converted and added a penalty shortly after to extend the lead.
The Black and Ambers extended the lead tem minutes later. Again Cardiff seemed comfortable on the ball but Newport got their hands on it. Several phases stretched the defence and allowed Elliot Frewen to score, Jones again added the extras fro a 17-0 half time lead.
The Blue & Blacks must have been given a severe half time talking to because the started the second half much better that they had the first. Scott Sneddon got them on the board with a penalty and when he added a second and Davis Pattison was sin-binned for the visitors the Blue & Blacks were in a much better position.
Then came the turning point. A very kickable penalty was taken quickly. The ball was worked to near the Newport try line only for the third gift to be handed to the visitors. The ball popped free and Matthew Pewtner picked up and ran the length of the field to score and extend the Black and Ambers lead.
Cardiff’s forwards huffed and puffed for the rest of the game but there was no cutting edge behind. Newport defended as if their lives depended on it and held Cardiff out to deny them even a bonus point.
