Two yellow cards saw Cardiff slump to a second defeat on the road at Pontypool Park. The first half belonged to the home side but after ten minutes neither side were able to trouble the scorers. In fact the first penalty didn’t come until the tenth minute. Patchell was wide with his first attempt.
It all went wrong for the Blue & Blacks from there. First Thomas Young was sent to the bin for an early tackle he was followed two minutes later by Dan Crimmins. During that time Pooler took full advantage. Tom Hancock slotted an early penalty followed by a try by hooker Ryan Prosser. Hancock added the touchline conversion.
A minute later and a backs move against the thirteen men saw fullback Geraint O’Driscoll cross. Again Hancock added the conversion. Patchell eventually got Cardiff on the board with a short range penalty just before half time.
The second half saw Cardiff start brightly. Cory Allen found himself in space on outside and his clever chip through bounced up nicely for him to re-gather and score.
But Pooler were in the mood and a second O’Driscoll try extended the lead. Try as the did the Blue & Blacks could not get field position. Missing touch didn’t help matters and Pontypool were to get their bonus point try for a missed kick.
The ball was run back at Cardiff and a couple of missed tackles allowed Rory Budina to cross. Dan Crimmis got one back for the visitors but it was probably as much as the Blue & Blacks deserved.
