Match Report

Cross Keys 18 Cardiff 42

Cardiff made the best possible start to the end of season game scoring within three minutes.

A short kick  off was re-gathered by Chris Bundy, and as the ball was worked wide Matthew John was sent racing towards the line. He was stopped just short, but recycled ball was moved the other way a large overlap was exposed,. Nathan Trevett showed backs hands to pop a pass to his fellow prop James Monck who went over unopposed. Patchell added the extras to take his points total for the season past 100

Keys came more into the game and were awarded a penalty that gave them their first points, Sam Mills slotting the kick, as he did shortly after to bring the Keys within a point. But Cardiff extended the lead a few minutes later when Keys attempted to run the ball only for the pass to be intercepted by Patchell who ran in from halfway, a try that he converted.

Ina fast paced but error riddled first half Ryan Lee was next on the scoreboard as the Blue & Blacks forgot how to tackle allowing the Keys winger to scramble over wie out. The restarts though were going Cardiff’s way and from this one the ball was worked forward by Rory Watts-Jones. Cardiff were awarded a penalty at the next ruck that was kicked to within five metres and from the lineout Dan Crimmins was at the back of the maul to crash over.

The bonus point was secured just before half time when Patchell ghosted through the defence, draw his man and feed Tom Williams, Patchell added the conversion to give the Blue & Blacks a 28-11 lead.

That lead was extended two minutes into the second half. A backs move saw Cory Allen slip a delightful pass to Matthew John to score under the posts  And the move nearly came off again five minutes later, the last pass though went astray and into touch. Allen was having a great second half, disrupting Keys at every opportunity, and his tackle set up another attacking position for Cardiff, but another spilt pass ended the move.

Keys got a try back ten minutes from time when James Leadbetter scored a converted try and Steffan Jones scored for the Blue & Blacks after another Allen break but the second half  didn’t live up to the try fest of the first and looked like the end of season game that it was. Sneddon converted the final try as the referee blew for no side. Cardiff though will be happy with a bonus point win
