Bristol took the spoils in a tough opening game of Pool 1 in the British & Irish cup.
The first ten minutes belonged to the visitors as they dominated both territory and possession. Cardiff’s defence though was solid and kept Bristol at bay. They did though manage a penalty that Matt Jones landed having hit the post with an earlier effort.
Joe Griffin also hit the upright with his first effort when Cardiff did manage to get into the Bristol half. Jones doubled the Bristol lead with another longer range effort before Griffin halved that lead with a long range effort of his own. Two minutes later it was all square as Griffin was again on target, and when Matt Williams was sent for a ten minute sit down following an offside Griffin put the Blue & Blacks in front as the half time whistle blew.
The early moments of the second half belonged to the home side. The defensive effort was turning over the ball and created openings and when one of those turnovers found Cory Allen he put his foot down, threw a dummy and raced through a whole in the Bristol defence on half way. Having made the break he had the gas outpace the defence and score in the corner.
This spurred Bristol into action. Replacement outside half Jason Grindal was putting the ball behind the Blue & Black defence making them play from deep. The pressure soon became too great. A spilt ball was kicked through by Mitch Eadie who picked it up and crossed under the sticks, Grindal added the extras.
He was also on target with a penalty shot following a bout of fisticuffs that saw Ellis Jenkins red carded. That put Bristol ahead and they cemented the victory when Ryan Edwards scored towards the end of the game.
