Match Report

Cardiff 46 - Bedwas 23

Cardiff gained a bonus point in an entertaining end of season game at the Arms Park.

The game started with a bang as veteran flanker Jamie Ringer showed the youngsters how to chase down an outside half. He got to Richard Powell and charged down his clearing kick in the second minute. From the resulting ruck the ball was moved wide and Thomas Pascoe drew the last man and put Mike Stephens over in the corner.

Bedwas hit back shortly after as a rolling maul from a metres out was shunted over, Joe Mills crashing over. The kickers then took over as Dean Gunter and Powell exchanged penalties, Gunter added his second before the Blue & Blacks got their second try. Again it came from a Bedwas mistake, Pascoe hacking a loose ball down field and when Tom Williams gave it another nudge into the in goal area Shaun Powell was on hand to fall on the ball to score, Gunter added the conversion to extend the lead. Bedwas again hit back. Moving the ball wide they created an overlap for Rory Budina to score.

The second half saw Cardiff take control of the game. Five minutes in and try number three was registered. A slick backs move saw Shaun Powell coming back on a great angle and when Gunter slipped him the ball he cruised through to score under the posts. Gunter was on target with the conversion and added another penalty before the home side sealed the game. Craig lodge, who had been outstanding all game, turned over a ball in the Bedwas half and when charging up field. When the ball was recycled Tom Slater was able to slip through a hole to score the bonus point try. A the game was put beyond doubt when Gunter again timed his pass beautifully to send James Loxton under the posts. Bedwas had the final say as former Blue & Black Steve Cullen scored their bonus point try but it was the home side that were celebrating as they leap-frogged Newport to finish seventh in the table.
