Cardiff beat Merthyr at The Wern in the second pre season game of the season. In a scrappy first half the home side had the better of the opening ten minutes. The visitors defence was up to the challenge though and held out several thrusts from the Merthyr pack.
And it was the Blue & Blacks that scored first. Several penalties got Cardiff near to the Merthyr line and when a lineout was driven towards the line Ethan Lewis was able to reach out to score. Back came Merthyr two penalties by Steve Lane gave them the lead and when Josh Fry was able to repeat the effort of Lewis earlier the home side went into the half time break 11-5 up.
The Blue & Blacks came out in the second half with a new purpose. They got themselves ahead when Harry Davies finished off a smart move from the base of a scrum, and when Ieuan Jones powered over the lead was increased to two scores. Cardiff’s pack was now dominating and when they were allowed another attempt at the line the only way Merthyr could stop it was to drag it down forcing the referee to award a penalty try.
That was the end of the scoring but a good workout for the Blue & Blacks before the visit of Richmond next week
