Match Report

Cardiff 24 Richmond 21

Cardiff won their third pre season game as they overcame a strong and committed Richmond tea at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Richmond were the better side for most of the first half and when they moved the ball they looked very dangerous.  Christ Surman opened the scoring when he slotted two simple penalties and things got even better when a slick backs move put fullback Rob Kirky in space, he drew the last man and fed winger Will Browne who touched down in the corner.

Cardiff got back into the game when a series of penalties eventually led to a five metre line out. The ball was worked back through the pack and Nick White has shunted over. Richmond extended their lead with another slick move, this time Kirby put Adam Gadsby over. Cardiff came back into it when Mike Stephens showed neat skill to chip the ball over the defence to touch down, Dean Gunter added the extras to leave the score at 12 -18 to the visitors.

The second half saw the pendulum swing in the Blue & Blacks favour. Dean Gunter landed an early penalty when Richmond strayed offside and he was on target four minutes later to level the scores. When he struck from long range Cardiff were in front for the first time in the game and with the whole team pressurising and tackling anything and everything that Richmond threw at them. That was always always going to lead to turnovers and when the visitors gave away yet another penalty Gunter's boot fired Cardiff six points up. Rob Kirby fired a penalty over ten minutes from time to give Richmond hope, but the defence was, as it has been in every game so far, was magnificent and held firm.
