Pontypridd earned the right to represent the Blues Region in this season’s British & Irish Cup as the home side ran in four tries.
The game didn’t start well for the Blue & Blacks, within ten minutes they were 13 points down. First Simon Humberstone landed penalty. Alex Webber shot round some poor tackling to score the game’s first try and when Tom Williams broke round the blind side of a ruck there was only one player to beat. Ceri Young made the tackle but the Assistant Referee ruled that Willaims got the ball down before being bundled into touch.
Dean Gunter got the Blue & Blacks on the board with a short range penalty before adding another two minutes later, but Humberstone replied in kind to keep the home side ahead. And that lead was increased when a rolling maul from a lineout cruised across the Cardiff line – Owen Sheppard the beneficiary. Gunter added another penalty just before half time and was on target shortly after the break to give Cardiff hope
The referee had issued six yellow cards in all but Craig Locke’s second meant Pontypridd had to defend the last 26 minutes with fourteen. That they did with ease and each time they went forward they were rewarded with points, Humberstone landing two neat drop goals before Gavin Dacey scored the fourth and final try.
