11 October 2014 - Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff

Match Report

Cardiff 17 Newprt 14

Cardiff made it five wins on the run against the oldest enemy at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Newport made the running in the early minutes as they moved the ball wide but as they looked to get on the outside George Watkins picked off the pass to run half the length of the field to score. Gunter converted and was on target to add the extra for the second try. A five metre lineout was rumbled forward and Ben Roach was able to plunge over from short range. Newport got on the board when a penalty was kicked across filed instead of for touch. Cardiff we asleep and the ball bounced into Owen Broad’s hands. Geriant O’Driscoll brought the visitors closer with a simple penalty and was on target a minute later. Gunter replied in kind to leave the half time score 17-11.

The second half was very forgettable. Matt O’Brien landed a long range penalty at the start of the second half. Cardiff missed four penalties to seal the win but it was poor display from both sides in perfect rugby conditions. Will Thomas and Jonathon Morris tried to ignite something but the constant whistle meant no momentum for either set of supporters to get excited about. Newport threw everything at Cardiff in the last ten minutes but the Blue & Black defence held firm to close out the game.
