Match Report

Cardiff 24 Cross Keys 40

Cross Keys gained revenge for defeat earlier in the season by scoring a bonus point win at the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Luke Ford opened the scoring in the third minute for the Blue & Blacks as the centre crashed through the defence to score, James Thomas was on target with the extras to give Cardiff the early lead. Keys were straight back at the home side though and a burst by former Cardiff favourite Leon Andrews set up a try for wing Nathan Trowbridge, Ethan Davies added the conversion from wide out.

In a first half that swung in favour of one side then the other Cardiff were next in the box seat, a couple of driving lineouts close to the Keys line though failed to provide any addition to the score. But it was the visitors that were next to score. A break by Josh Prosser was just stopped short of the line but another former Blue & Black Polo Uhi has able to crash over from short range, Davies added the extras. Back came the home side. A fantastic break by Chris Williams got the Blue & Blacks close to the Keys line and with Nicky Griffiths on his shoulder the scrum half was able to pop the ball to the centre to score. Thomas added the conversion to leave the score tied at half time 16 all.

Straight after the break though Keys went back in front. Owain Leonard, who had only come on to the filed as a blood replacement, fed a scrum on half way, picked the ball up at the base and raced between two defenders before beating the last man to score. Davies was again on target to goal the score, Leonard was soon back on the bench having had a major impact in his three minute spell on the field.

Key bonus point came shortly after when flanker Scott Matthews went over at the back of a maul. Cardiff did reduce the deficit, Ford again showing his good scoring touch for his second of the match to give Cardiff some hope. That hope was extinguished when a penalty try close to the end sealed the game for the Keys.
