Match Report

Bridgend 10 Cardiff 16

Cardiff held off a last quarter onslaught from the Bridgend Ravens to earn a first win in the Challenge Cup.

Playing into the strong breeze at the Brewery Field the Blue & Blacks were soon behind. A clearance kick was half changed down and as Cardiff tried to recover the ball was hacked through by Marc Bennett who gathered and scored. Liam Jones added the extras. The visitors though we're getting on top in the scrum and a series of penalties set up great field position from which their first points came. After several lunges at the line the ball was spun wide where Luke Ford was put into space by Geraint Llewellyn. The powerful centre was able to race towards the line before taking two tacklers over with him. Ford's fourth try since returning to Cardiff.  Callum Hall was wide with the conversion but added a penalty a few minutes later.

After drawing level Cardiff were dealt a blow when Callum Lewis was stretchered off with a nasty looking ankle injury and just before half time the Ravens added to the misery when Jones landed a simple penalty to send them in 10-8 ahead.

The second half saw plenty of changes but with the rain and wind made handling difficult and many errors meant a lot of scrums which now weren't going Cardiff's way. The Blue & Blacks though did take the lead back. A period of sustained pressure culminated in Hall chipping the ball over the on rushing defenders into the in goal area when Tom Slater was on hand to dab the ball down just before it went dead. Hall added the extras and from there it was all defensive duties for the visitors.

Bridgend threw everything they had at Cardiff and when the Blue & Blacks went down to fourteen things looked bleak. But the defence was superb. A series of scrum penalties were defended as well as the ball being spread. Morgan Sienawski and Charlie Spring lead the effort, the prop appearing at one point on the outside to tackle the wing into touch.

When the Ravens were reduced to fourteen by a red card to Zac O'Driscoll for foul play the Blue & Blacks looked to take advantage but the conditions again stop the move. All that was left was to defend one last Ravens charge before getting the ball off the pitch for a deserved win.
