Cardiff lost their first game in the Foster’s Challenge Cup in the rain and the mud at Sardis Rd
Pontypridd flew out of the blocks and took a very early lead, Alex Webber found space down the wing and flicked the ball inside for Geraint Walsh to score. Lewis K Williams added the conversion. Despite the conditions but both sides looked to move the ball around the park when they could but it was the Ponty pack that was to dominate the first half. At nearly every scrum they put the squeeze on the Blue & Blacks and it was no surprise when No 8 Dan Godfrey was at the back of a five metre scrum to plough over the line. Williams again adding the conversion.
The Blue & Blacks responded straight away. Following the kick off clearance the forwards drove into the heart of the Ponty defence. That created space outside and Oli Smyth was give the scoring pass by James Loxton for a try that went unconverted. Geraint Llewellyn was though on target with a penalty shortly after. The home side responded twice before half time. Another scrum resulted in Dan Godfrey’s brace and just before half time Alex Webber went over for the bonus point try and a commanding 32-8 interval lead.
As the conditions got worse the standard of play declined. With both sides tiring following the exertions of the first half the ball spent a lot of time in the mud. Cardiff were a much better in the second half. The scrum was now on a par with the home side and they were rewarded with a try when a quick tap from a penalty saw Luke Ford go over. Llewellyn goaled the try, but despite having most of the ball Cardiff could not gain any further score and they were forced to defend for the last few minutes before bundling the ball into touch on their own line right on the final whistle.
