Cardiff left the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park with only a losing bonus point from their match against Pontypridd but will know it could have been so much more.
The Blue & Blacks were led onto the field by James Murphy who was ,asking his 100th appearance for the home team. And the game was to start at 100 miles an hour. Ponty seemed to have the upper hand in the opening minutes but Cardiff were solid in defence though especially at the st piece. The first three Pontypridd line-outs landed in Cardiff hands and with the scrum also dominant the Blue & Blacks looked to take advantage.
But it was Pontypridd who scored first following a Cardiff mistake. A high ball was dropped just outside the twenty-two and Pontypridd were awarded a penalty Ceri Sweeney slotted the points. Cardiff came straight back. A series of pick and gos pushed them into the Ponty twenty-two, and when the back was moved wide Diggy Bird spotted two forwards in front of him and glided through for a try he converted himself.
Pontypridd were soon back in front when another dropped ball landed in the visitors hands. Garyn Smith was the beneficiary as he crossed near the posts, Sweeney converted. Cardiff were level a few minutes when a scrum disintegrated and Bird landed the resulting penalty. The rest of the first half went by in a flash. Both sides should have added to the scores. Pontypridd got behind the Blue & Black defence and when the ball was spread a three to one overlap was blown as instead of simple passes white line fever took over only for Harri Millard to put in a fantastic try saving tackle. Cardiff too had a try scoring opportunity as a an overlap was created, the final pass though didn't go to hand.
Just before halftime though Pontypridd went back in front as another Cardiff mistake allowed the visitors to send Lewis I Williams over. Sweeney converted and Ponty went into the dressing rooms 17-10 ahead. The second half continued at the same pace as the first with both sides looking to attack. The Cardiff pack though we're starting to really dominate and a series of penalties gave Cardiff back the lead. Sweeney increased Ponty's lead, but three penalties by Bird put the Blue & Blacks ahead and gave Man Of The Match Bird a personal haul of 19 points.
Sweeney though was to win the game for Ponty as two penalties put the visitors back in front. Cardiff did have one last opportunity to win the game with the last play but the move ended in touch and Pontypridd went home with the points.
