Pontypridd gained a bonus point win at Cardiff Arms Park in front of the biggest crowd of the season, including several touring rugby teams and some cartoon characters on a stag day.
The early exchanges were mostly in the Cardiff half. Ponty pilled on the early pressure and were rewarded with two Lewis K Williams penalties. Cardiff were playing on the break and when a long kick downfield was run back at the visitors only a forward killing the ball seemed to prevent a score. Rhys Patchell landed the goal that resulted to bring the Blue & Blacks back into the game.
From the kick-off Matthew John burst up the middle of the filed and raced into the visitors half. As he was tackled Ponty again offended, Patchell adding a second penalty to level the scores. Ponty were to take control of the game though in the twentieth minute. From a lineout they drove towards the home line. When that was halted the ball was whipped wide for Matthew Nuthall to score. Williams added the extras and four minutes later was instrumental in their second try.
Another lineout was moved off the top to Williams who’s delayed pass put Gavin Dacey in a hole for his to score under the posts. Williams again added the conversion and just before half time gave Ponty a 14 point advantage with a long range drop goal.
The second started as the first had ended with the visitors in control. Williams landed another penalty but that was the start of a Cardiff revival. A loose ball was snapped up the home twenty-two by Shaul Powell. He found Matthew John who darted in and out of the defence to score. Patchell added the extras.
Cardiff were to score again a few minutes later. A penalty was kicked into the corner and after several drives at the line skipper Rory Watts-Jones burrowed over. Patchell goaled the try.
That though was to be the end of the fight back as Pontypridd went on the hunt for the win. Williams slotted another penalty before former Blue & Black Dan Godfrey went over at the back of a scrum from five metres out. Just before the end the visitors got the bonus point try when Rhys Downes was able to score from short range.
