Shaun Powell named Cardiff RFC Captain

By Ian Tabor | 15/06/2012

Shaun Powell has been named as Cardiff RFC Captain for the forthcoming season.

The announcement was made by Director of Rugby Martyn Fowler at the squad’s first meeting this week. Speaking of the announcement Martyn said ‘Shaun is a hard running centre who has a versatile skill set, making him capable of playing both centre and wing. I felt it important that our Club captain be a Cardiff RFC contracted player who leads from the front every week whether on the playing or training pitch and is proud to wear the Cardiff RFC shirt. Shaun is all too aware of the responsibility the Captaincy of a Club of Cardiff RFC standing brings and will ensure standards are met and adhered to all season. He as are we are fully committed to emulating the successes of past RFC squads over the next two years.

Powell who is in his forth season with the Blue & Blacks takes over from Macauley Cook. ‘ It is a great honour to be named as captain of the greatest club in World rugby. You only have to look at the names on the captains board to realise what illustrious footsteps I am following in. There are giants of the world game listed, Gwyn Nicholls, Bleddyn Williams, Jack Matthews – all centres like myself and of course Gareth Edwards, Gerald Davies to name a few, so I have big shoes to fill’

Shaun continued’ I was reminded that when I was about 11 I said one of my ambitions in my rugby career was to play at Cardiff Arms Park and I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that in the past few seasons. When I was asked to captain the side I had no hesitation in accepting. There is a really good balance in the squad this season, from the old heads like Trevvy and myself to the youngsters who are coming through. Last season we produced some quality players. Alex (Cuthbert) and Harry (Robinson) obviously being the head-line stories, but there are quite a few of our squad with the Wales U20s in South Africa this month and several who appeared for the Blues last year, I’m sure that trend will continue this season. Having lots of pre-season games will give all the squad an opportunity too show what they can do and I know that we are all looking forward to August the 4th when we can get stuck in’
