Charles Lyn 'Cowboy' Davies was born in Bancyfelin and attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School and Trinity College, Carmarthen.
Davies played rugby from a young age and represented the Wales Schools team. As an adult he played for Blaengarw, Carmarthen Athletic, Glamorgan Wanderers, Llanelli and Cardiff. It was when playing for Cardiff that he was selected to represent Wales, winning three caps. All his international appearances were part of the 1956 Five Nations Championship, his first match was against England under the captaincy of Cliff Morgan when he scoring a try that he ran in from 40 yards.
