Alun Gruffydd Thomas born in Cwmavon in 1926. He gained a Welsh Secondary School cap against England whilst attending Port Talbot County School in 1945. He then went on to Aberystwyth University and played for Llanelli Wanderers, Llangennech and Swansea.
He joined Cardiff in 1950/51 making the traditional debut for Cardiff Athletic against Old Edwardians in November 1950 and proceeded to gain 82 caps for the first XV making his debut against Cheltenham. He won his first XV cap in his first season and gained 14 caps for Wales.
A member of the legendary Cardiff side that beat the 1953 All Blacks, playing at centre, he was also a wing against South Africa in 1951. In 1955 Alun moved to Llanelli and was selected for the Lions tour of South Africa in 1955. Unfortunately injury restricted him to only 5 games.
From 1963-1968 he was a Welsh Selector and Assistant Manager of the first ever Welsh tour to South Africa in 1964. he then became President of the WRU in 1985. He was also related to Len Blythe and his nephew was Rodger Blythe.
