Educated at Greenock Academy, James Bridie (1857 – 1893) was a Scottish born centre who played his club rugby for Cardiff and Newport. He played nine times for Cardiff before moving east to join his brother R H (Ronald) Bridie at Newport. During his career Bridie played for Greenock Wanderers, Newport, Penarth, Cardiff Wanderers (captain), Cardiff, Manningham and Bradford. Although never winning full international honours James Bridie played at centre for the Welsh XV in two non-cap matches against North of England and the Midlands in 1881, also playing for Monmouthshire and South Wales.
