James Earnest Finlay was born in Banbridge Co Down Northern Ireland on 11th October 1887.He was educated at Banbridge Academical College and Queens University, Belfast.
He was a rugby player being one of eight players to play for Ireland before and after World War 1.

Played 6 games for Cardiff RFC 1919/20. He gained 6 caps for Ireland, making his debut against England in 1913. He died 6th April 1966 in Devon.
