Graham Hale was born in Cardiff and attended Marlborough Road School, before moving to Newport Road in Cardiff. He became a pupil at Cardiff High School, where he played his first rugby and later joined the Cardiff High School Club.
Graham had a trial in 1938 with Cardiff RFC where he partnered Wilf Wooller in the centre whilst a schoolboy.
He played in the 1938 and 1939 wins over the Barbarians and in the latter years he was a member of the Cardiff 7s that won the Middlesex 7s at Twickenham.
However, war broke out and he joined the Welsh Guards, he became a POW in Benguazi and due to ill health was repatriated back to Britain 18 months later. Graham made a full recovery and rejoined Cardiff RFC and played on the wing.
Graham also represented Wales in the days when shirts were returned after the game.
