Robert Francis Williams was born in Tongwylais and grew up in Cardiff. One of 17 children he worked from the age of 14 at Cardiff Docks. He began playing for Cardiff RFC in 1909, making 30 appearances as fullback in the 1910/11season. He was elected captain of the side in the 1914 season. Williams returned to rugby after the First World War still playing for Cardiff until the end of the 1919/20 season, ending his club career with 159 appearances. He gained four caps for Wales making his debut against South Africa in Cardiff on December 14th 1912, following week he played against them again with his club side Cardiff and played twice for the Barbarians in 1915 both games against Leicester.
