Prop forward John Rawlins played 15 games for Cardiff in 1981 - 82 (just failing to gain his Cardiff cap) before leaving to join Newport where he played 188 games - one of which was the Schweppes Cup Final against Cardiff in 1986. A member of Cardiff Youth John played a couple of games for the 'Rags' and also went on the tour to South Africa in the summer of 1982.  John represented Welsh Students and South Glamorgan Institute and was a member of the Welsh Squad that played in the first Rugby World cup in 1987 – the only uncapped player in the squad. and also played for Newport against Fiji in 1985. After retiring John went on to became Honorary Secretary of Cardiff Met RFC. His older brother Peter also played for Cardiff.
