Gareth Baber, a native of Cardiff, played for Llandaff Youth before joining up with the Cardiff Senior squad in 1992 where he stayed for just one season. Moving on to study at Swansea University, Gareth linked up with the Llanelli development squad from where he gained representative honours with the Welsh students and at U21.
As his studies progressed Gareth moved on to Oxford University where he gained his "Blue" before returning home to Cardiff for another two seasons. In 1995 he was on the move again to Aberavon and the following year moved to Bristol in the English premier league.
After four seasons with Bristol, Gareth decided to move back to Pontypridd, where he stayed until 2003 when he joined the Newport Gwent Dragons, was also a regular in the Welsh Sevens squad.
Gareth retired from domestic rugby at the end of 2006 - 2007 having spent four seasons with the Dragons.
Baber began his coaching career whilst still playing for the Gwent region and coached the Dragons U20s.
Following his retirement Baber took up a coaching role with the Cardiff Blues Academy. In March 2007 he took over the reins of the Wales 7s for the Hong Kong leg of the 2006 - 07 IRB World Series, leading them to a Plate Trophy victory.
