William Derrick John (Bill) Carling was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Welch Regiment. A a rugged prop forward, he played for Cardiff, Bath and Blackheath as well as playing county rugby for Cornwall. Carling was selected to play in an England trial match but a back injury prevented him from playing. Bill Carling played 20 games for Cardiff in the 1966 – 7 season, being awarded his club cap.
One of his sons is the former England international Will - who played on 72 occasions for his country including 59 as captain.
