William Derrick John (Bill) Carling was a Lt-Col in the Welch Regiment. He was a rugged prop forward and played for Cardiff, Bath and Blackheath as well as county rugby for Cornwall. He was also selected to play in an England trial match but a back injury prevented him from playing. Bill Carling played 20 games for Cardiff in 1966/67, being awarded his club cap.
Bill Carling is the father of former England international Will - who played on 72 occasions for his country including 59 as captain.
