R John

R John

Position: Centre

Roy John was arguably one of Wales’ best second row forwards in the period following the Second World War. Educated at Neath Grammar School his first club was Crynant but by the time he made his international debut in 1950 he was playing for Neath and by the end of the season he was touring New Zealand and Australia with the British Lions. Yet when he started playing rugby Roy John was a centre and it was in this position that he made his only appearance for Cardiff, against Leicester at Welford Road in January 1946, scoring Cardiff’s only try in a 12 – 8 defeat.

Roy died in Neath in 1981 at the age of 55.
